What Is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The idea is straightforward: work in focused 25-minute blocks called Pomodoros, separated by short breaks. After four consecutive Pomodoros, take a longer break to recharge. The rhythmic structure prevents burnout, reduces the urge to multitask, and makes large tasks feel far less overwhelming.

How to Use This Pomodoro Timer

  1. Start a session — click Start (or press Space) to begin your 25-minute work block. The animated ring counts down visually so you always know how much time remains.
  2. Take your break — when the timer finishes, a notification alerts you and the timer automatically switches to the break phase. A short three-tone sound plays to signal the transition.
  3. Track your progress — the dots below the ring show how many Pomodoros you have completed in the current cycle. After four Pomodoros the long break begins and the counter resets.
  4. Pause or reset — press Pause at any time to step away without losing your place. Reset restarts the current phase without changing your completed-Pomodoro count.
  5. Customize — open Settings to adjust work time, break durations, and the number of Pomodoros per cycle to fit your personal rhythm.

Why Pomodoros Work

Research consistently shows that the human brain is not built for sustained, unbroken concentration. Attention drifts, decision quality declines, and errors increase the longer you push without a pause. The Pomodoro Technique works because it:

FAQ

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method developed by Francesco Cirillo. You work for 25 minutes (one Pomodoro), then take a 5-minute short break. After four Pomodoros you take a longer 15-minute break. The repeated cycle helps you maintain focus while preventing mental fatigue.

Can I change the timer durations?

Yes. Open the Settings panel at the bottom of the timer and adjust the work duration, short break duration, long break duration, and the number of Pomodoros before a long break. Click "Apply & Reset" to save your settings and restart the cycle.

Does the timer work when I switch tabs?

Yes. The timer continues running in the background when you switch to another tab or window. When a session ends, the browser sends a desktop notification (if you granted permission) so you know when to switch back.

Is my timer state saved?

Your current phase, completed Pomodoros, and remaining time are saved automatically to your browser's localStorage. If you refresh or close and reopen the page, the timer resumes from where you left off.
